At the heart of the Hyena PowerPod lies a blend of engineering precision and energy innovation, designed to bring reliable electricity to Africa and beyond.

Jack Fletcher, Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer of Hyena, introduces the Hyena PowerPod, which generates electricity by converting LPG into hydrogen-rich gas, then feeding it into a hydrogen fuel cell. This creates a clean, on-demand energy source without the need for diesel or complex infrastructure.

Henny Quartzer, Senior Manager of Technology Development, gives a deeper look into the reactor at the core of the system. The reactor uses steam reforming technology — a high-temperature process combining water and LPG — to produce hydrogen and CO₂. This hydrogen is then converted into electricity via a fuel cell.

An earlier prototype of the reactor, built with thick-gauge steel, faced challenges with heat distribution. The current version uses thinner gauge steel, which improves heat transfer, lowers energy requirements, and makes the reaction more efficient overall.

The system is also versatile: as demonstrated during the session, the PowerPod can charge an electric vehicle directly from the hydrogen fuel cell — proving its potential across multiple sectors.
